Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles back at Djarrk (Bells Beach)

For the first time since the pandemic hit, the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles are back at Djarrk (Bells Beach) from May 27 until May 29.

The event, presented by Rip Curl, is set to bring together the country’s best Indigenous surfing talents for a celebration of culture on Wadawurrung Country.

“We are thrilled that the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles is back in 2022,” Surfing Victoria Indigenous aquatics manager Jordie Campbell said.

“It’ll be the first time the event has run since 2019 and will be an amazing celebration of Indigenous culture at a sacred traditional place like Djarrk.”

Now in its 10th year at Bells Beach, the event is a significant gathering that usually attracts north of 100 surfers from across the country, with many communities being represented.

“There’s been many conversations had around the country in approaching this monumental event and everyone is definitely excited to be apart of it,” Campbell said.

“Hopefully the waves will be pumping and our surfers can enjoy surfing in the ‘Bells Bowl’.”

Surfers set to take part in the contest include former event champion and popular free surfer/artist Otis Carey (Coffs Harbour), Russel Moloney (Shelly Beach) and former women’s division winner Summer Simon (Port Kembla).

This year is also set to feature a whole new range of faces, with Campbell saying many surfers who will take part in their first Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles event.

“We can’t wait to see the new talent that is out there."

“We are also stoked that our women’s and junior divisions are looking to include the biggest field they’ve ever had.”

Surfing action is set to kick off at 9am at Bells Beach tomorrow (May 27).

A traditional welcome and smoking ceremony is set to take place tonight (May 26) from 4.30-5pm at Bells Beach.
