After almost a year without major participation events, we’re thrilled to welcome a record field of over 3,500 cyclists to this weekend’s Great Ocean & Otway Classic Ride on the Surf Coast. To celebrate the return of mass participation sports events, we’ve pulled together this guide to all the running, cycling and adventure races planned within the Surf Coast Shire through to the end of 2021.
The Surf Coast is lucky to host some of Australia’s favourite sports participation events, all offering a range of options for the beginner through to the elite. These events have traditionally provided a great opportunity for people to connect, celebrate and challenge themselves in a safe, fun and welcoming environment. In 2020, COVID-19 resulted in the cancellation of events around the world. In the Surf Coast alone, we lost over 100 events, festivals and markets from March through to December.
In the absence of ‘live’ events, two new positive trends emerged; more people took up running, walking and cycling than ever before; and there was a huge increase in the popularity of virtual events as people turned to digital platforms for performance tracking and a sense of connection. After months of solo adventures and virtual challenges, it’s now time to put your new-found fitness to the test and connect back to real-life, COVIDSafe events. What better place to start than right on your doorstep!
