Great Ocean Road Running Festival – traffic notification

Thee Great Ocean Road Running Festival will start in Lorne and proceed along the Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay on Sunday 15 May, 2022.

Some roads will be closed, with detours in place around Lorne from 5.00am – 9.00am.

Road closures and detours are in place to support the safe conduct of the Great Ocean Road Running Festival. The event organisers are grateful for the use of the Great Ocean Road and apologise for any inconvenience. The inclusion of the Ultra Marathon, Trail runs and the Lorne Great Ocean Road Walk will not impact on road closure times.

Event details: Sunday 15 May

8.00am: Marathon and Ultra Marathon start in Lorne Lower Car Park (SLSC)

8.00am: Half Marathon Starts in Kennett River

Run events start in the Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) car park.

Run events use the Great Ocean Road, finishing in Apollo Bay.

8.10am – 8.30am: Trail events and Lorne Great Ocean Road Walk

Trail and walk events use the Great Ocean Road, finishing in Lorne.

Road closures

  • 00am – 9.30am the Great Ocean Road – Mountjoy Pde Between Bay St & Hird St
  • 00am – 2.30pm the Great Ocean Road – From Hird St to Apollo Bay

Note: The Great Ocean Road will be re-opened progressively for eastbound traffic (from Kennett River to Lorne) when it is confirmed participants are clear of areas allowing a safe re-opening.

Parking restrictions

Parking will be restricted in Mountjoy Pde and the SLSC Car Park from late Saturday 14 May to midday Sunday 15 May to ensure a safe set up of the Start Area.

Lorne township will remain open

  • A detour will be in place while the Great Ocean Road is closed for the event.
  • Detour will direct drivers to Apollo Bay via Deans Marsh, Barwon Downs, Tanybryn and Skenes Creek.
  • A vehicle escort system will be in place between Skenes Creek and Apollo Bay. Delays to be expected.

Traffic flow will be affected for the duration of this event. Emergency access will be provided.

Access will be maintained under control of traffic controllers during these events.

V-Line services will be impacted due to the road closures. Please contact V-Line directly for details (www.vline.com.au)
