Candle and castle extravaganza
Lorne’s popular candle and castle competition will return for its 25th edition next month.
More than 50 participants are expected to head to St George River on February 24 to build a sand sculpture and illuminate it under the night sky.
The event has a “no rules, no age limit and no cost” mantra, and will feature plenty of exciting prizes donated by local businesses.
Event founder Chloe Messner said locals were keen to get building after the 2023 event was called off due to bad weather.
“It’s always popular, and there really isn’t anything like it anymore,” she said.
“It’s low key, you roll up with your shovel, or mini digger and just go for it."
“People get surprised at how fun it really can be and are very proud of what they can produce.
“We are starting to see generations of families through. Those who did it when they were kids, are now bringing their own, which is really cool.
“Bring a picnic and something to light your creation and stay for the fun.”
Ms Messner said this year’s event would be her last in charge, with the hope someone else could keep the flame alight moving forward.
The event begins at 6.30pm and will run until just after dark.
