Inaugural Torquay Triathlon

HUNDREDS of athletes descended on the Surf Coast on Sunday, November 10 for the inaugural Torquay Triathlon.

Teams and solo entrants took on the Super Sprint challenge, completing a 400m open water swim, 15km cycle and 4km run.

Organisers Lisa Anderson and Andrew Letts were happy with how everything went on the day, which attracted 470 participants to the event.

“We felt like the community really embraced it and people came down to support friends and family and the Torquay people,” Ms Anderson said.

“We had international competitors, we had interstate competitors, it was just a really exciting day.”

The triathlon welcomed participants of all ages and experience levels, with 40 per cent of entrants being first timers.

Paralympian Jeremy Peacock took on the role of ambassador for the event, helping prepare competitors at the transition areas and calling events.

"I think the buzz of having a Paralympian there was fantastic and I think people really soaked that up as well,” Mr Letts said.

David Fawkes took out first place and course record holder in the men’s open category, with Jacob McKie in second and Sean Miller in third.

In the women’s open category, Alana Park crossed the finish line first, followed by Louise Wood and Ruth Tarres.

Penny Nevill competed in the 30-39 age group category and took out the course record for the women with a time of 00:50:02.

The organisers said feedback from the community and participants has been really positive and was a highlight for them.

Ms Anderson and Mr Letts thanked all the sponsors and volunteers who helped out during the event.

Keep an eye on the Torquay Triathlon Facebook Page for the announcement of next year’s date, with plans for the second event already in progress.
